Feature selection for microarray gene expression data using simulated annealing guided by the multivariate joint entropy

In this work a new way to calculate the multivariate joint entropy is presented. This measure is the basis for a fast information-theoretic based evaluation of gene relevance in a Microarray Gene Expression data context. Its low complexity is based on the reuse of previous computations to calculate current feature relevance. The mu-TAFS algorithm --named as such to differentiate it from previous TAFS algorithms-- implements a simulated annealing technique specially designed for feature subset selection. The algorithm is applied to the maximization of gene subset relevance in several public-domain microarray data sets. The experimental results show a notoriously high classification performance and low size subsets formed by biologically meaningful genes.Postprint (published version

Madrid G1000: An Example of Drawing and Deliberation as a Complement to Representation

El pasado 4 de marzo el Ayuntamiento de Madrid reunió a 1000 personas, organizadas en 100 mesas de 10 personas cada una, para discutir sobre propuestas donde destinar los 100 millones de euros de los presupuestos participativos. Estas 1000 personas, además, fueron seleccionadas al azar para componer una muestra representativa de la ciudad. ¿A qué paradigma democrático responde esta experiencia? ¿Para qué se utiliza la selección de ciudadanos al azar? ¿Este ejemplo puede suponer una sustitución de la democracia representativa? Els problemes ambientals tenen l'origen en les activitats que ens porten a satisfer les nostres necessitats d'aliments, energia i materials. I, des d'aquest punt de vista, hem d'evitar la contínua degradació dels ecosistemes i de la seua capacitat per proporcionar-nos béns i serveis que són necessaris per a la nostra supervivència. Un dels reptes més rellevants que tenim en aquests moments és fer una transició des d'un sistema energètic basat en combustibles fòssils a un sistema basat en fonts d'energia renovables. L'aprofitament d'aquestes fonts renovables comporta fer ús de nous materials constituïts per elements que, fins ara, han sigut poc emprats. Aquesta situació provoca, a curt termini, problemes de subministrament que poden afectar la implantació d'aquestes noves tecnologies. Però també comporta problemes a llarg termini relacionats amb l'accessibilitat d'aquests elements.The environmental problems have its origins in the activities that bring us to satisfy our needs of aliments, energy and materials. And, from this point of view, we have to avoid the continuous degradation of the ecosystems and of its capacity to provide us goods and services that are necessary for our survival. One of our most important challenges in these moments is the promotion of a transition from an energy system based in fossil fuels to a system based in renewable energy sources. The exploitation of these renewable sources needs the use of new materials constituted by elements that, up to now, have been little employed. This situation causes, in the short term, problems of supply that can affect to the implantation of these new technologies. But it also comports long-term problems related with the accessibility of these elements

La théorie de la traduction en Espagne

Le présent article fait état d’un aperçu de la réflexion, en matière de théorie de la traduction, d’un important groupe de professeurs d’universités espagnoles qui oeuvrent en traduction ou en traductologie. Dans les années 1990, une série d’ouvrages pionniers voient le jour et offrent une riche diversité de concepts sur la théorie de la traduction et sur son application didactique. Si, pour Lvóvskaya, il convient de mettre l’accent sur l’équivalence dans la communication bilingue, pour Elena, il s’agit plutôt d’appliquer à l’espagnol les théories allemandes du fonctionnalisme et du skopos. Tricás, quant à elle, développe l’application des théories de l’argumentation linguistique en traduction sur le plan textuel, tandis que Hurtado se centre sur un développement exhaustif de chacun des piliers de la traduction. Rabadán et Merino, de leur côté, centrent leurs travaux sur les Études descriptives de traduction (EDT). Par ailleurs, d’autres chercheurs suivent des orientations diverses : Vidal (déconstruction, manipulation, pouvoir), Carbonell (postcolonialisme), Corpas (corpus traductologiques), Muñoz (dimension cognitive), Ortega (herméneutique) et Mayoral (la traduction comme technologie).The present paper provides an overview of the reflections about translation theory carried out by a large group of Spanish university scholars working in the fields of Translation and Translation Studies. A number of pioneering works in these fields that offer various and rich concepts about translation theory and its didactic applications were published in the 1990s. While Lvóvskaya emphasizes on equivalence in bilingual communication, Elena is more inclined to apply functionalist and skopos German theories to Spanish language and translation. On the other hand, Tricás explores the application of language argumentation theories to translation on a textual level, whereas Hurtado pursues an exhaustive study of every pillar of translation, and Rabadán and Merino focus on the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). The impact of the American Civil War on city growth

This paper analyzes the persistence of the shock caused by the American Civil War on the relative city size distribution of the United States. Our fi�ndings suggest that the effects of this shock were permanent, which sharply contrasts with previous results regarding World War II for Japanese and German cities. It should be taken into account that the conflict considered in this paper took place at an earlier stage of the industrialization and urbanization processes. Moreover, our results are determined by the fact that the battles were fought in the open �field, not in urban areas. Some related evidence regarding the presence of a safe harbour effect is reported.
